Have you ever thought of something that is brighter and more vibrant than the conventional LCD panels? Here, let us introduce what is AMOLED. You might have heard of the term before for many devices. But do you have a good idea about what it is?
What is AMOLED: The Definition
AMOLED or Active-Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode is a modern OLED display device technology. An OLED is a specific type of thin-film-display technology.
Since 2007, AMOLED technology has been a popular choice for many mobile devices, media players, TVs, and digital technologies. The organic compounds present in the AMOLED display form the electroluminescent material while the pixels are constructed with the active matrix technology.
Since the beginning, AMOLED technology has been improving with the features of low-power, low-cost, high resolution, and large-size applications.
How Does It Function
The active matrix, along with the TFT backplane technology, is the central part of the design of the AMOLED display. The TFT or thin-film-transistor controls the seamless current flow. At least two TFTs are needed against one pixel to ignite the desired luminescence. The active matrix generates light or luminescence upon electrical activation deposited or integrated onto the TFT series.
The TFT backplane technology includes two types of technologies. One TFT is used to control the charging of a storage capacitor. On the other hand, another TFT is used to provide the required voltage source. One is polycrystalline silicon or poly-Si, and another one is amorphous silicon or a-Si.
To get an idea about what is AMOLED, you must know what sets it apart from others. If you look at an AMOLED display screen, there are some basic features you will notice. The features are:
- Brighter and more vibrant than LCD panels
- More saturated colors than LCD panels
- Deep Black Levels
The Variations of AMOLED Display Technology
Since the renowned brands have been using AMOLED displays, integrating more unique features with them, AMOLED displays are popular among users.
So, as now you have got an idea about what is AMOLED, let’s proceed with the diverse kinds of AMOLED display technology.
This variation was invented by SAMSUNG. The company created it by integrating a touch-screen digitizer with the basic AMOLED design.
Super AMOLED Advanced
It is an AMOLED variation with a brighter display and higher resolution than Super AMOLED.
Super AMOLED Plus
It was first brought into the market by SAMSUNG with SAMSUNG Galaxy S II and SAMSUNG Droid Charge smartphones. However, it is brighter than other AMOLED variations but less energy-efficient than them.
HD Super AMOLED
It includes Super AMOLED Screens with 720p resolution. It was an AMOLED display variant used in the model of the Samsung Galaxy S3.
As per the report, Samsung is about to bring more advanced technology for displays including Youm, y-octa, etc. More vibrant, advanced AMOLED display designs with high resolutions are on the way. Hence, if everything goes well, we will be enjoying more improved display technology soon.
