Creating the shortcut to shutdown and restart will make your job easy on shutting down and restarting the Windows PC.

In order to achieve this, we will use the “create shortcut” wizard, available in Windows.

Going further, you can also assign the keyboard’s 3 key combinations to shutdown and restart, starting with ctrl and alt.
This way you will be able to shutdown and restart the Windows computer just by hitting the key combination.

1. Shortcut to Shutdown

To create the shutdown shortcut we will first open the create shortcut wizard to the location where you want to create that shortcut, in this case, we will create it on Desktop.

shutdown -s -f -t 0

It is strongly recommended that you “Know the parameters” used in this command to shutdown the computer before you execute it.

  • Name this shortcut as “Shutdown” (without quotes), in the “What would you like to name the shortcut” window, and click Finish

Your shutdown shortcut is now available on the Desktop screen.
Now all you need to do is double click that shortcut to shutdown the computer.

2. Shortcut to Restart

The process is the same if you want to create the restart shortcut, the only difference is changing the parameter from -s to -r

shutdown -r -f -t 0

  • Name this shortcut as “Restart” (without quotes), in the “What would you like to name the shortcut” window, and click Finish

Following that will create the shortcut to restart on the selected location.

3. Assigning key combination

In this section, you will know how you can assign the key combinations to your shutdown and restart shortcuts.
This way you won’t have to double click on the shortcut to execute it, you can execute the shutdown and restart just by pressing the key combination.

  • Right-click on the shortcut that you created for shutdown or restart
  • Go to “Properties“, the last option in the list
  • The properties window will open, make sure you are in the “Shortcut” tab
  • As shown in the picture below, click the “Shortcut key” box
create keyboard shortcut of a program
  • Once you see the cursor inside the box, press a number or letter to assign the key
  • Click on Apply and Ok

This will assign the key to the shortcut.
As you might have noticed, the shortcut key actually started with Ctrl+Alt, so you have to use Ctrl+Alt+<the letter or number you assigned> to execute the shutdown or restart command.

If you find that the keyboard shortcut isn’t working, first check if you are executing the command by holding down the ctrl and alt, and then change the letter or number you assigned, if it still doesn’t work.
The letter or number is probably assigned to something else.

This method can be used to assign a keyboard shortcut to any program you wish

4. “Create Shortcut” wizard

  • Right-click anywhere on the empty space of the desktop screen
  • Go to New > Shortcut

In Windows create shortcut wizard helps you in creating shortcuts for files, folders, applications from the local machine, and from the network, you can even create shortcuts for online URLs.

The wizard can create a shortcut to any location, given that you open the wizard to that location only.

5. Know “The Commands”

Here you will know which commands we will use to create shortcuts for shutdown and restart.
The command is almost identical, just the parameters change.

Command to Shutdown

shutdown -s -f -t 0

Command to Restart

shutdown -r -f -t 0

Know the parameters

s – shutdown, this initiates shutdown
r – restart, parameter to initiate a restart
